 Resources for Family History

Because the parish of St George’s was one of the most densely populated areas in the country, many people find that research into their Family History leads them here at some stage.

A full set of Registers, Baptism, Marriages and Burials does exist for the parish, starting from 1602. (The Burial Register ends in 1868.) Only the current registers are held at the church. All the historic volumes are deposited with

The London Metropolitan Archives

40 Northampton Road, London EC1R 0HB

The Archive also holds Registers from churches which were created out of St George’s parish in the 19th century, and which have been closed during the second half of the 20th century – namely

St Michael & All Angels, Lant Street

St Stephen, Tabard Gardens

St Jude, Colnbrook Street

St Alphege, Lancaster Street

(The continuing congregation of St Alphege now meet at Kings Bench Street, SE1, and the Baptism Register is held in the parish)

Further documents relating to St George the Martyr, and most records of the Civil Parish, are held at the nearby Southwark Local Studies Library, at 211 Borough High Street, SE1 1JA. A published guide to their archives is available.

A guide to St George’s – The Building and its History – is available from the parish, price £2.00, inc. post & packing.
